What are the Seven Stages of Dementia?

Dementia is a mental problem where people experience either progressive mental or cognitive decline. In general it is a disease in which people tend to lose their memory. Forgetfulness is one of the symptoms of cognitive decline. It is one of the types of brain disease that leads to lose of memory, thinking abilities, communication problem, problem solving and loss of language that severely affects the daily life of the people.

Seven Stages of Dementia

As per the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS) prepared by Dr. Riesberg, the progression of dementia has been divided into Seven Stages. They are as follows-

Stage 1- (No Cognitive Decline)

The CT scan of the brain may show that their is some changes going on in the brain, but the patient or person does not feel that changes.

Stage 2- ( Very Mild Cognitive Decline)
The second stage may seem normal or common for the older people because at this stage people starts to forget little things or misplacing objects, forgetting words to speak. People may ignore such things. This stage may also occur due to aging of the people.

Stage 3- ( Mild Cognitive Decline)
At this stage people start to suffer from short term memory loss. As they forgets the name of their colleagues or friends. They may not be able to make plans or organize anything. They forget what they have read few minutes before. They may start losing or misplacing certain things.

Stage 4- ( Moderate Cognitive Decline)
At this stage people generally starts to avoid being social. They lose interest from things they used to enjoy before. Calculation of things become difficult at this stage. Disorientation of time and place by the people. The signs and symptoms may be visible to other people.

Stage 5 ( Moderately Severe Cognitive Decline)
This is the stage where people experience major problems of memory loss as they even forgets how to bath or eat. They even faces problem in wearing their own clothes.

Stage 6 ( Severe Cognitive Decline)
At this stage people hardly remember anyone and even mistake one person for another. They fail to recognize their own family members or closed ones. They struggle with severe confusion and anxiety.

Stage 7 ( Very Severe Cognitive Decline)
This is the final stage of dementia. At this stage people forgets almost everything. They have to depend fully upon other person to eat or to go to bathroom also. They are not able to perform basic activities also.
